  8. Preamble: This is Shareware.  I am requesting a contribution of $20  
  9. (although I'm not proud...I'll accept any amount) so that I may con-  
  10. tinue to produce and provide quality LaserWriter fonts at bargain pri-  
  11. ces.  The bank keeps knocking on my door...  
  12.   
  13. Here's a few tips on how to use and enjoy your new LaserWriter+ font -  
  14.   
  15. This font - Cuneifont - is described below.  
  16.   
  17. There are three files included in this package; this Read Me First notice,  
  18. the bitmap font and the LaserWriter font.  
  19.   
  20. I hope you are reading this first.  
  21.   
  22. The LaserWriter font appears on the desktop as a LaserWriter Icon with  
  23. a "document" with the letter T on it.  Move this icon into the system  
  24. folder.  It should be there for proper printing.  An alternative loca-  
  25. tion is with the application that will use the font.  The latter is not  
  26. as reliable (at least to my understanding.)  That's all you have to do  
  27. to install the LW font.  
  28.   
  29. The bitmap font must be installed in the system that will be used with  
  30. the application.  It MUST be installed with Font/DA Mover 3.2 or later.  
  31. Earlier versions did not create a proper FOND table in the system (the  
  32. FOND is a table that holds info on kerning pairs and character widths,  
  33. etc. so that LaserWriter knows where in relation to the other letter to  
  34. place the character.)  
  35.   
  36. I don't usually create many different sized bitmaps because the Laser-  
  37. Writer doesn't need them.  They are only for the users convenience in  
  38. helping determine how a page will be laid out.  It is a real pain to  
  39. edit bitmaps.  Most fonts are optimized for LaserWriter and not for  
  40. the bitmap versions.  
  41.   
  42. Therefore, if you decide you want to experiment with cleaning up the  
  43. bitmap images, there is a list of things you CANNOT do or you will  
  44. destroy the relationship that exists between the screen version and  
  45. the LaserWriter and the LaserWriter will not print the proper version  
  46. (it will either substitute another font, or it will print the screen  
  47. font).

  49.         DO NOT CHANGE CHARACTER WIDTHS  
  50.         DO NOT CHANGE THE NAME OF THE FONT  
  51.         DO NOT CHANGE THE FONT ID  
  52.   
  53. It's best to do all you typing in a more readable screen font (i.e.,  
  54. Geneva or Chicago), check for errors, then do the final layout in the  
  55. screen font (this applies more to other fonts than to this version of  
  56. SansSerif, which has a very clean and readable bitmap; it even prints  
  57. well on the LW as a bitmap!)

  61. ModernPrint -   looks like very fine hand printing - works best with  
  62.                 WORD or Pagemaker - or any application that lets you  
  63.                 fine control leading.  This original font is  
  64.                 independant and compatible with any PostScript device  
  65.   
  66. Cuniefont -     It's readable, but I wouldn't use it on a resumé.  
  67.                 I'd use it on the cover of an Archaeology text  
  68.                 though.  It's interesting.  This original font is  
  69.                 independant and compatible with any PostScript device  
  70.   
  71. SansSerif -     This is a very clean, readable typeface.  Very Elegant  
  72.                 and simple.  Should be very popular for business  
  73.                 applications like reports, resumés, etc.  This original  
  74.                 font is independant and compatible with any PostScript  
  75.                 device  
  76.   
  77. MegaShade-      This is a referenced font - based on Helvetica.  
  78.                 It is compatible with all LWs.  MegaShade is an outline  
  79.                 face filled with 50% grey.  Good headline material.  
  80.   
  81. Calligraphic -  This one references a LW+ font -  
  82.                 ZapfChancery-MediumItalic.  However, this one is not  
  83.                 italic.  Furthermore, in the option-shift-letter  
  84.                 range are White Caps on a square grey diamond-backed  
  85.                 outlined background (Decorative Initials!).  
  86.                 Set these Initials at 48-60 points (recommended) and  
  87.                 wrap text around them - voila, instant 17th century  
  88.                 manuscript!.  This is a really good one - recommended  
  89.                 for use with WORD or PageMaker.
